Although this blog is fairly new, you might have gotten the idea that I really dislike “internet marketing gurus.” I was used and abused by these people for years and I’m quite bitter about it.
I have a little message for these “gurus.”
I was watching the show Pitchmen today, and I can’t help but admire Billy Mays. This guy just did things the right way, and he sold many millions of dollars in products. I’m usually not a big fan of direct response advertising, but if you’re going to do it then do it like Mr. Mays.
Billy Mays only promoted products that he believed in. He very meticulously reviewed the value, quality and usefulness of each product he sold. He could have fired off commercials on a daily basis, but he didn’t.
If you promote and sell internet marketing products, why not follow the lead of this man? Don’t just send a promotion to your email list because a product has a good payout. Don’t just strive to make a quick buck when you know the product is just some re-written crap. Don’t just promote something because your JV buddy sent a promo out for your product.
There are real people on the other end of those emails, and sometimes I think that this fact is forgotten. Have some integrity.
get free updates when I post again by rss or by email. if you really want to make my day then you can share this post with your network. you rock.

I know what you mean. It’s sometimes hard to tell whether someone is promoting a product or service because they truly support it or because they’re trying to make a buck. This is where building trust and developing relationships becomes critical.
Tammy and I promote things we’ve have a connection to, like books we’ve read or products by people we trust. I don’t ever want someone to buy something through my affiliate link and later hate me for steering them in the wrong direction. There’s too much good stuff out there that people can really use so why promote the junk?
Scott, you and Tammy do things the right way, that’s why I like you guys! And you are right for sure, the last thing you want is to lose your good reputation by promoting something that sucks.
