Another case of elimination

August 31, 2009

I decided to do a video post today, my first one ever on this blog. I am very surprised as to how much I enjoyed doing it.

The topic is on eliminating things from your daily routine that can be pretty easily eliminated. In my case it was SportsCenter on ESPN. Oh, and my puppy, Rondo, makes an appearance, so check that out :-)

It’s about 3 minutes long, and there are notes on the video content below.

Video notes:

How I am saving approximately one hour of my time each morning, while still getting my beloved sports news (and top 10 plays).

  • Just read headlines.
  • Quickly skim news articles for important stuff.
  • How I tune in to SportsCenter at a specific time to get what I really want out of the show.

Am I missing a lot by doing this? Nope. Maybe a little, but not enough to matter. The time I’m saving is much more valuable than the news I’m missing.

One thing I forgot to say in the video: If you are a news addict, try to fix that because… Anything important that you need to know you will probably hear through word of mouth anyway.

Also, here’s the video I watched with Gary Vaynerchuk this morning (really awesome). Thanks to Robert from The Life Design Project for sharing that with me.

What can you eliminate? What process can you make more efficient?

the growth of this site depends on you, please share it. get free updates when I post again by rss or by email.

CUTE PUPPY! (And to avoid confusion, I meant Rondo.)

I’m a perpetual eliminator of waste. I spring clean, summer clean, autumn clean, winter clean…..

Good call on the video post, Nate. Elimination is one of the biggest hurdles to better time allocation, for me at least. My biggest issue is getting sucked into media, whether its Google Reader, Twitter or good ‘ole fashioned television.

I like your approach to batching sports news, so next week I’m going to try a batching experiment of my own. I’ll let you know how it goes!

@ Andy – He is a cutie isn’t he? And cleaning for all the seasons is great! Here’s to perpetual elimination…

@ Alan – Looking forward to hearing about your batching experiment. That stuff is exciting to me. And the media kills me too, I’ve come a really long way over the last month or so though. I’m down to once a day on email, and once a day on Facebook, and once a day on Google Reader. Thanks for the comment!

Greetings Nate.

Video is great to get a better idea of who you are. Keep them coming.

I used to be addicted to reading financial newspapers and watching satellite TV programs. They sucked hours from every day. The best thing I ever did was cancel my newspaper subscription and my satellite TV service.

Sure it is nice to be entertained, but we all have a choice to passively watch the world or be active participants. I chose to create.

Hey Man!

Awesome video idea, I haven’t implemented it yet but going to soon.

I’m going to Amsterdam with my buddy Glen from PluginID, and we are going to document our trip and post the videos on our blogs :)

As for the time wasting thing, My biggest wasters are checking email and affiliate program stats to see if I made a sale. Haha, this is such a waste of time, so working on that to just do something constructive every time I get the urge to do that.

Keep the cool posts coming!

@ John – Choosing to create and be active definitely beats out being a passive watcher. Maybe eventually I’ll get rid of my TV, I only watch about an hour a day, but that hour is just so darn good :-)

@ Diggy – Videos from Amsterdam… sounds great man. Looking forward to seeing those. And checking affiliate program stats used to be a huge problem for me! I swear I would log into Clickbank 20 times a day. I’ll be fighting the affiliate stats urge again soon I’m guessing, as I’m going to be starting a few websites.
