Finally made the to-do list

October 1, 2009

I made my life to-do list. I’ve been putting it off for a while now, but a couple of days ago I ended up reading Sean Ogle’s list again. It was really the push I needed. There was a good post on this topic at Wage Slave Rebel not long ago as well.

Why start a to-do list, bucket list, or whatever you want to call it?

Because life is short. I’m sure that we have all had our own reminders of this in our lives. You really can’t afford to waste any time.

To make “someday” seem a little more realistic. I’m always saying, “Someday I’ll go to Thailand, someday I’ll visit every state in the U.S.” Well, someday isn’t going to happen if I don’t get my butt in gear. This list makes my goals seem more realistic and reachable.

Because a list can get you focused. I know that when I don’t write down each thing I need to do during the day, I’m all over the place and really unproductive. A life to-do list is just an amplified version of your daily to-do list. It’s purpose is to get me focused on reaching the goals I’ve set for myself.

So, here’s the list.

If you haven’t made one yet, DO IT! I had a lot of fun putting mine together, and I’m sure you will too.

Its about time Nate!! Well done, and keep us posted as you make progress on the list. Let me know when you tackle #22, im there!

Great job on making a list. I have always thought that it is best not to make the whole list in one sitting, because you always think of great things later on.

You are very right that the list will keep you focused and make it easier to achieve your goals. Are you going to start working on your goals now?

I like the goal “Take Trans-Siberian Railway from Moscow to Beijing” I would love to do that.

Good luck with your goals

Hey Nate, good list! Are you going to check off the ones you’ve completed so we can all see your progress?
Also, let me know how long the motivating power of making that list lasts for you, before you have to go and review it or rewrite it to get a new boost.
I’m currently looking into that kind of thing myself.

My favorites:

4. Make a big decision by flipping a coin
8. Spend two weeks exploring Alaska
22. Take Trans-Siberian Railway from Moscow to Beijing

Let me know when you’re doing #22 (seriously). I was in Novosibirsk, Russia – one of the stops – and I can only imagine what it would be like to bootstrap one’s way through the Siberian hinterland.

Great list, Nate. I may have to jump on board and draft my own!

It’s a cool idea which I hadn’t even considered doing before. I will have to get cracking on one too. It’s a cool idea to see that you’re making progress on things you really want to do in life.

Nice one Nate! Love #22. Let’s meet up sometime and do that one. Met a guy in New Zealand from Finland who said it was amazing.

Thanks everyone for the great comments, I mean it.

Sean – You’re welcome for the mention, you sparked the idea so I had to give some credit. #22 seems like a popular one in the comment so far, and I would love to have some company!

Philip – Thanks for the comment! And yup, I’m sure I’ll add a few things here and there. I’m going to get cracking on this list as soon as I can, I’m just really focused on saving money right now.

Shane – I will be checking this off, and filling everyone in on the details. I think that’s the best way to go, and I love following the progress of other people who are doing the same thing.

Alan – Those might be my 3 favorites as well. The Siberian Railway is something I am looking forward to more than I can even explain. I would love to have some company, and it seems like a lot of people are interested in that. Maybe a lifestyle design community trip?

Gordie – I definitely encourage you to make one of these lists! I didn’t realize how much fun it would be until I started doing it.

Ross – Good to hear that the guy you met loved it! I’ve read and heard nothing but good things as well. And I’ll put you down as another person who’s interested! It’s great to see how many people love the idea.

I don’t know if we have read about the same guy, but I know about the true Indiana Jones who wrote a todo list at the age of 16 of what he wanted to do in life. Today he has done pretty much everything in that list, and he had very ambitious goals as we all know.

Oscar – I’ve heard about that guy, read about his story somewhere. I’ll have to look that up again!
