Honest affiliate marketing

June 26, 2009

A few days ago Brian Clark over at Copyblogger wrote about new affiliate marketing disclosure regulations. Apparently the FTC is going to start penalizing bloggers and affiliate marketers who don’t disclose their affiliate links.

I think that this is awesome news. If you have a problem disclosing affiliate links, you are probably doing something you shouldn’t be.

If you make your audience happy and treat them well, they shouldn’t care that you get a little compensation when they make a purchase through your affiliate link.

A couple of days ago I started a little side project. I’m currently writing some content for a niche website promoting an affiliate product. Am I going to disclose my affiliate links? You bet I am. This is because I’m going to completely honest.

I’m going to actually buy the product I’m promoting, and I’m really going to use it. I’m going to use my real name in my content and videos (my promotion page is going to be a short video review of the product).

I’m going to give my website visitors a really cool free ebook (no opt-in required, it’s optional). The basic idea is that I’m going to build trust, and that’s the way it should be.

By the way this is a side project for me, I might spend 15-20 minutes a day on this site at the most. My main focus is on this blog and a project that I’m going to tell y’all about in a couple of days.

What do you think of this news regarding affiliate links?
