It’s not laziness

May 17, 2009

When I talk to people about my desire to not live the typical 9-5 life I get a variety of responses. One of the responses that really bothers me is when people say something like, “Well, you just can’t be lazy your whole life.”

Wanting a life of nonconformity cannot be confused with laziness. Here are a couple of reasons why you may get this type of reaction from those around you, and what you can do about it:

They don’t understand – Many people out there have no idea that a world of location independent professionals and digital nomads exists. Have patience and explain exactly what your business is going to be like. Having a very solid and realistic business plan will give you instant credibility with people who think you want to just sit on your butt all day.

I have been surprised how much peoples’ perception of what I am talking about changes once I tell them what I plan on doing in more detail.

They are jealous – Even if you haven’t achieved your goal of freedom yet, people could be jealous that you are actually taking the initiative to live how you want. So many people live unhappy lives and make absolutely zero effort to change their circumstances. They may feel like you are acting “better” than them because you won’t just conform to what is seen as normal and what they feel they have to do.

You should be able to tell the difference between those who don’t understand and those who are jealous very quickly. Avoid these jealous people. They are going to do nothing but hold you back.

Don’t let this post make you think that all people will view your goals with suspicion. There are a ton of people who have encouraged me and view the lifestyle I pursue as awesome.

What experiences have you had when people find out your desire to live differently?

Nate,

Yeah, I’ve had that experience in one form or another. I’ve also noticed that some people will try to belittle your ideas and try to make them seem less important, valuable, or worth while than what they are doing. They may compare your plan to something that gets a higher social rating or level of acceptance as if you can really compare them.

Nothing is of greater value than the meaningful way that you choose to serve, help, and uplift humankind.

Be well,
Scott
