What sucks about a vacation

July 14, 2009

Today I was thinking about how badly I want to go on a vacation. I’m planning on going to Washington D.C. in August sometime and I’m really anxious to go. But…

There’s one thing that really sucks about vacations: They end.

What can you do to make sure that your life is a vacation? I know this may seem a little far fetched, but it really isn’t.

Vacations are great because of things like not worrying about an alarm clock ruining your beauty sleep, spending time with family, making your own schedule for the day and experiencing new things. It is totally possible to do that every day.

I’m a big believer in the idea of, “If you love your work, it isn’t really work at all.”

Never “working” would mean that technically you are always on vacation. In my next post I’m going to talk about something that is often forgotten by people who are trying to design a better lifestyle for themselves through a better work situation. It has a lot to do with the difference between the normal type of work we all know (and often hate) and the work that doesn’t really seem like work at all.

Stay tuned.

Ah, the difference between the normal type of work and work that doesn’t seem like work.

I remember hearing a few other bloggers attack Tim Ferriss and The Four Hour Work Week for this very concept. (Among other things of course.)

Here’s the main post from Free Pursuits:
http://www.freepursuits.com/2009/07/09/the-4-hour-work-week-is-a-bunch-of-hype-but-thats-not-the-point/

The other two articles in particular get into Tim’s “different” concept of work.

This was one thing that inspired me to write the Perception and Reality post. One book, so many different viewpoints and opinions.

To me though, there’s good work and bad work. Good work involves progress and moving towards your goals. Bad work involves wasting your time and sucking your soul, day by day.

What can you do to make sure that your life is a vacation? Good question. Wish I could figure out the answer! Really tough to do while you’re working 40 hours/week. Hey, ever been to D.C. before? Pretty cool place. It’s one of the places I took Scott when he visited Virginia for the first time. So much to see there! We stayed at the Virginian Suites. It was a really nice place for the money. Of course, that was 10 years ago so who knows how much rates have gone up since then! http://www.virginiansuites.com/index.cfm

@ Andrew – I remember reading that post from Free Pursuits. It’s a great one I love that blog. I agree that 4 hour work week is not possible, but I really do agree with what Tim Ferris says about work. And you know I agree with you about the good and bad work idea. Bad work sucks, I hate it. In fact, I kind of feel like the work I’m doing during my day job is “bad work”, although I am VERY thankful to have a job. So many people have trouble finding work so I feel very fortunate. I really can’t wait though to break free and do my own thing :-)

@ Tammy – It sure is a tough question! I think about it all the time. And yes, I’ve been to D.C. before. Loved it. I’m actually fortunate to be staying with my brother, who lives in Fairfax so paying for lodging won’t be an issue. Virginian Suites looks awesome! Maybe on another visit I’ll check them out. Thanks for the comment!
